During the first weekend of March I took a group of Youth at Risk to Asessippi Ski Resort to offer these inner city kids a taste of the outdoors, part of our adventure was lunch with Colin Frey from Renewed by Nature, our challenge was to build a fire to heat up our lunch. Colin showed the kids what type and how much material would be ideal to get a fire going quickly, once the kindling and firewood was gathered, it was time to put the materials down in the correct order, in this case we built an upside down fire, starting with the largest materials on the bottom and then piling on small and smaller materials on top. Colin also demonstrated how to make a feather stick just make sure that the fire would start quickly.
Once all the materials were set it was time to light it up! However we had no matches, no worries, Colin had the ideal piece of kit to get it going, a strike anywhere fire starter, with the kindling set Colin explained how the Firestarter worked and then with one pass and one spark we had a roaring fire! Now that the fire it was time to cook up lunch, we had a large pot of soup but no way to heat it! So once again Colin to the rescue, he instructed the kids once again on the suitable materials to collect and once they had everything we needed, we set out to build a tripod complete with a pot hanger and before you know it the kids were feeding away on hot soup and bannock!
Great Job Colin!! The kids are still talking about the experience!!

I started writing a series of articles named “I can Survive” that appear in Outdoor Edge magazine. The series is meant to teach a variety of outdoor and bushcraft related skills with a focus on survival. Recently, Canadian Outdoors: Western Edition has started republishing the articles. The pieces look better in the magazines, but I thought I would start sharing copies on this site for those who are interested. Keep tuned for more articles in the future!
